  7.     Why did Governor PETE WILSON say he would "very likely"
  8. sign California's gay-rights bill, only to veto it five months
  9. later? Presidential ambition. Savvy politicos noted that as soon
  10. as Wilson won the close-fought gubernatorial campaign a year
  11. ago, he began setting his sights on a 1996 bid. But when the
  12. bill outlawing job discrimination against gays landed on
  13. Wilson's desk, top GOP strategists warned him that he would lose
  14. conservative support if he signed it. Maybe they were right. But
  15. because of his performance on this and other issues, recent
  16. polls show that Wilson's voter-approval ratings are the lowest
  17. of any California Governor in 25 years. By this time next year,
  18. Wilson may be running hard to recapture the statehouse instead
  19. of dreaming of the White House.
